Morafe Ambassadors Look Back On The Programme

Last year we launched a new program, the Morafe Leadership Development Programme, and welcomed a new cohort of Ambassadors. From both the United States, Prince George’s County; Maryland and North West; South Africa. This was the first time where we had students from both countries in the program not just in parallel but together. It was certainly a new learning curve having to run a fully virtual programme and training of the Youth Facilitators and we added to the community while learning new things in spite of and because of the pandemic.

The IAWA Community Gathers to Celebrate

Recently, we hosted gatherings in the US and South Africa to support our parents, celebrate all we have achieved, and elicit feedback. The first event was a parent’s workshop on “How to Strengthen the Parent-Child Relationship.” On the other side of the world, it was all round happiness when our USA community, which included ambassadors, parents, facilitators and board members, also gathered for Sunday Brunch. On 6 November 2021, the South African community came together again for a special lunch for all community members to reflect on the year’s accomplishments and preview next year’s exciting programming opportunities.

Reflections from Quarantine: How have I been since lockdown started?

What do you think of the statement “Patience is virtue?” I always saw it as a cliché and never really understood it until I encountered lockdown this year. To me this lockdown feels like the entire nation or maybe the world is locked: no one is allowed to see anyone, services, schools and universities are closed, only essential workers like doctors are working and the normal day to day activities an individual is used to are no more. This time of lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been difficult for me and everyone I know across the globe.

To Cape Town and Beyond

Since our first camp in October 2015, the Ambassadors participated in 10 two-week long holiday camps that “empowered them to confidently own their future.”  They participated in learning excursions that allowed them to discover and explore places such as Pilanesburg National Park, Constitution Hill, Wits University, and the UNISA Science and Technology Center.  

Most recently, they applied all of their learning from the camp to raise over R44 471 ($3,000) to travel to Cape Town
